Chicka Stockton R.I.P.
Baseball lost another piece of its history today with the death of Chicka Stockton this afternoon (18.8.08). Baseball is one of the smaller sports in this city and because of its size each piece of its history looms large. Both physically and metaphorically Chicka Stockton was a big part of that history over the past 30+ years. Along with his wife Frances, Chicka ran Cumberland when it was the largest senior Baseball League in Sydney. It is safe to say that for many years everyone in baseball knew the Stocktons. When the Auburn Baseball Club premises closed the Stocktons tried valiantly to maintain Oriole Stadium which had always been seen as the home of Sydney baseball before the advent of B.O.P. Although suffering ill health in recent years, Chicka's demeanour never changed. There are many people in Sydney Metropolitan Baseball League who will remember him fondly. S.M.B.L. extends its sympathy to Fran, Samantha and his family. R.I.P. Funeral arrangements... Following the announcement yesterday of the death of Chicka Stockton, be advised that his funeral will be held on Friday at 2.30 pm - South Chapel, Rookwood Crematorium with his cortege proceeding along Brixton Road and past Coleman Park.
